– what ISAAC research conducted by BIG tells us<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/strong><\/p>\nIn Italy, religious cultural heritage represents one of the most extensive, symbolic and vulnerable components of the national built environment. Bell towers, convents, shrines, cathedrals and minor churches<\/strong>, often located in areas of high seismicity<\/strong>, guard centuries of history and art, but are still among the least structurally protected buildings.<\/strong><\/p>\nThe research conducted by ISAAC<\/strong> and BIG – Business Intelligence Group<\/strong> shows that despite the presence of dedicated funds, earthquake-resistant interventions are still sporadic, uneven and largely reactive.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
The heritage is vast, but not systematically monitored<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nAccording to the mapping conducted as part of the research:<\/p>\n
\n- On average, the parishes surveyed operate between 3 and 6 buildings<\/strong> (churches, oratories, canonical houses), often listed and with historic-artistic value.<\/li>\n
- In mountainous or rural dioceses, facilities are often isolated, difficult to reach<\/strong>, and lack regular structural monitoring.<\/li>\n
- The perception of seismic<\/strong> risk is underestimated <\/strong>in many cases, even in territories classified as zone 1 or 2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The result is that safety interventions mostly occur following calamitous events<\/strong>, such as the 1997 or 2016 earthquakes, rather than on a preventive basis.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Funds exist, but they are not enough (and they don’t always arrive)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nThere are some dedicated funding channels in the religious and cultural sector:<\/p>\n
\n- 8×1000 fund <\/strong>earmarked for the Catholic Church, which finances structural restorations and consolidations<\/li>\n
- CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference)<\/strong> grants for church buildings of special historical value, often related to post-emergency situations.<\/li>\n
- Extraordinary ministerial funds<\/strong> in case of damage from natural disasters (earthquakes, floods).<\/li>\n
- Contributions from bank foundations<\/strong> or local governments, albeit sporadic and with limited resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
However, there is no fixed budget forecast for earthquake prevention<\/strong>, and most interventions are financed on a project <\/strong>basis, only after a survey or report. Parishes must advance part of the cost, often using local fundraisers or bank loans<\/strong>. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Toward beauty-compatible security<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\nDespite the limitations, research also shows a growing interest in innovative and non-invasive solutions<\/strong>. Modern technologies, such as those proposed by ISAAC, allow effective interventions without compromising the aesthetic or liturgical appearance of buildings.<\/strong> <\/p>\nThe challenge is to accompany parishes on paths of technical diagnosis<\/strong>, access to funds and smart design, valuing the heritage and protecting the communities that live it.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
