It is the San Andreas Fault, a large fracture of the lithosphere that runs through California, which causes an average of about 10,000 earthquakes each year. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">  <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This fault is of the <strong>strike-slip<\/strong> type, that is, it moves with <strong>horizontal movements<\/strong> with respect to the earth\u2019s surface. Its <strong>motion <\/strong> is decidedly <strong>evident <\/strong> when looking at a photograph of it from above, in which slippages of the ground that have occurred over the years are very clear.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/isaac-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/15392616_db43e7487e_b.jpg\" width=\"638\" height=\"478\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-244460 alignnone size-full\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The San Andreas Fault seen from above.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two large lithospheric plates move along the San Andreas Fault and slide close to each other: the Pacific plate and the North American plate. Active at least since the Jurassic period, the fault slides the western portion of California northward at a rate of about 3.5 cm per year. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/isaac-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/shear-zone-map-ec7c03-1024.jpg\" width=\"447\" height=\"594\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-244459 alignnone size-full\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Map of the San Andreas Fault and the movement of the Pacific and North American plates.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These <strong>continuous movements<\/strong> have led to the <strong>formation <\/strong> of a <strong>series <\/strong> of <strong>cracks <\/strong> in the <strong>earth\u2019s crust<\/strong> and, of course, <strong>numerous earthquakes<\/strong> over the centuries.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1906, a violent earthquake triggered by the fault movement hit San Francisco, causing the destruction of the whole city.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/isaac-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/4834905561_b46e60ddca_b.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-244458 alignnone size-full\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/isaac-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/4834905561_b46e60ddca_b-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/isaac-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/4834905561_b46e60ddca_b-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Big One<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To date, the <strong>San Andreas Fault<\/strong> represents a <strong>threat <\/strong> in all respects. In fact, as the fault moves, <strong>energy <\/strong> is <strong>built up<\/strong> that must be released. For too long there have been no earthquakes in the southern part of the fault. It is therefore expected that some sections of the fault that have high seismic risk potential, currently inactive, may move in the near future, releasing an enormous amount of energy.
